Oliver Purnell is a former college basketball coach who has led various Division I programs over his career. He was born on May 19, 1953, in Berlin, Maryland.
Purnell began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Oglethorpe University in 1975 before moving on to serve as an assistant at various schools, including Old Dominion University, Maryland, and Dayton.
In 1988, Purnell got his first head coaching job at Radford University and later coached at Old Dominion, where he led the team to an NCAA Tournament appearance.
Purnell went on to coach at Dayton, Clemson, and DePaul, achieving varying degrees of success at each program. Throughout his career, he was known for his emphasis on defense and his ability to develop players.
Purnell retired from coaching in 2015 after a 31-year career. He currently serves as a college basketball analyst on television.
